Beyond the modern town of Sandanski the ruins of an ancient town lay, settled in II millennium AD. From there Spartacus came – the leader of the biggest slave riot (in 74) in the Roman Empire. In Roman epoch the town was called Dezudava. Up to VI-th century it had been one of the first Christian bishop's centres in Bulgaria.
At the end of the sixth century it was ruined by Barbarian tribes. From those days it bore the name St Vrach in memory of the two brothers Kozma and Damyan who were people's healers. That name the town bore until 1947, when it was renamed Sandanski in honour of Yane Sandanski (1872-1915). He was one of the leaders of the Inside Macedonian-Odrin Revolutionary Organization.
The charm of the resort is its magnificent sycamores. Two of the trees have been declared as natural landmarks. The sycamore in the town centre is over 550 years old and is 23 metres high.

In the center of the town is the Museum of Archaeology which treasures material evidence of more than 27 centuries. The museum in Sandanski was founded in 1936 as an archaeological association aiming at researching and collecting the finds discovered in the region.

The verdure of the park shelters the town stadium, the open theatre hall, the open swimming pool, an artificial lake with a bar, a lot of boats and water wheels. At the very gate of the park a unique ferro-concrete map of Northern Pirin was made and installed by Nikola Mironski, a well-known Bulgarian mountaineer.
